One of the most dramatic changes in the Houston area hospital landscape in recent years is how many hospitals are being purchased by Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). HCA is a huge chain of hospitals based in Nashville, Tennessee.
To understand the wide reach of HCA’s hospital ownership and operation, consider these statistics. HCA hospitals have over 28 million patients each year, including 8.6 million annual emergency room visits. HCA has 249,000 employees, 87,000 nurses, and 38,000 active physicians on its combined medical staff. It manages 177 hospitals and 119 free-standing surgery centers.
You may have heard of HCA from a federal investigation that lasted almost a decade. It ended in 2003, with the "the government receiving a total of over $2 billion in criminal fines and civil penalties for systematically defrauding federal health care programs."
This morning, in The Woodlands, I met with a medical expert that I retained to testify in a medical malpractice lawsuit. She told me that yesterday North Cypress Medical Center announced to its employees that it was being acquired by HCA. I have handled numerous investigations and lawsuits involving care provided at this hospital.
