Quality of Care Issues
In December 2017, the U.S. government penalized 751 hospitals, including Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, in San Antonio, for having the highest rates of patient injuries in America.
The penalties were assessed in the form of a 1% Medicare reimbursement rate reduction for 2017-2018, based on the federal Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program. Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, in San Antonio, was also penalized by the program in 2016-2017.
The purpose of the governmental program is to give hospital’s financial incentives to improve the quality of care delivered to patients in three specific areas of focus. First, infection rates from several procedures, like colon surgeries, hysterectomies, urinary tract catheters, and central line tubes. Second, infection rates of certain bacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (C-diff). Third, rates of 10 hospital-acquired injuries, including things like certain blood clots, sepsis, wound ruptures, and bedsores.
This robust program of oversight is administered by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and reviews data submitted by accredited hospitals nationwide. Penalties are assessed each year for all General Hospital ranking in the bottom 25% nationwide for performance in these categories.
As a former hospital administrator, I know that having a facility recognized on a negative list of this nature is unwanted. Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, in San Antonio, Texas, made the federal list of bottom-performers for two years in a row, which suggests that the hospital still has significant room to improve on these federally-defined indicators.
