Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, located at 5501 S. McColl Rd. Edinburg Texas 78539, is a physician owned hospital that is officially owned by Day Surgery at Renaissance Ltd, which is also based in Edinburg, Texas.
This Hidalgo County hospital has over 500 beds, treating over 285,000 patients each year. It offers services including a women’s hospital, Level III-C neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), an emergency room, bariatric surgery, cardiology, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, colon and rectal surgery, cosmetic and plastic surgery, endoscopy, gastroenterology, general surgery, OB/GYN, labor, delivery, and birthing services, neurosurgery, diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and other specialty services.

Quality of care concerns
Any time that we investigate a potential medical negligence case, our law firm researches quality of care concerns that have been reported at the hospital involved.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services conducts on-site inspections at accredited hospitals. As a result of these inspections, the Medicare/Medicaid surveyors have cited Doctors Hospital at Renaissance with five violations since February 2012.
On May 4, 2016, Medicare/Medicaid cited the hospital with two violations. The first was for violation of patient rights pertaining to the review of grievances. As a former hospital been a straight or, I realize that the patient complaint and grievance process is an important tool for hospital leadership to use to monitor and improve patient safety. The surveyor found that the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance administration failed to ensure the effective operation of its grievance process, as detailed in its own internal policy. A patient’s family member alleged that a hospital staff member had assaulted or abused a patient, and also complained about the quality of care the patient received at the facility. The facility did not notify the patient or relative about any investigation, the grievance process, or the ultimate resolution of the grievance.
The second violation on this date focused on an in adequate discharge summary practice. The Medicare/Medicaid surveyor found that the hospital failed to ensure that the discharge summary was accurately written to reflect the actual disposition of care for a patient. In one instance, the records reflected that a patient was stable and discharged home into the care of a family member, when in actuality the patient was discharged to local police for an alleged criminal act.
When reviewing a medical record, there are two bookends that I look for. The physician history and physical is on one side, showing why the patient came to the hospital and the baseline condition. The other book and is the discharge summary, which is a narrative that explains the course of the patient’s admission to the hospital. It is important that these documents be complete and accurate, to allow future healthcare providers to provide informed, quality care.
On February 28, 2012, the hospital was cited with two additional violations. Both violations dealt with the failure of the hospital to protect and promote patient rights concerning the use of restraint and seclusion. From my experience as a medical malpractice lawyer, I know that the use of restraints and seclusion are sensitive and important topics in the practice of medical and nursing care. Their use requires a physician order, including the duration that they are to be used. The incident that the Medicare/Medicaid surveyor uncovered lead to the termination of one registered nurse.
On February 22, 2012, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance received an additional violation from Medicare/Medicaid for failing to provide patient care in a safe setting.
