The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently announced its annual star ranking for over 4,500 Medicare-accredited hospitals nationwide.
Only 228 hospitals received the lowest-possible ranking of one star. One of the one-star hospitals is in the Houston area, HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball, which was formerly known as Tomball Regional Medical Center.
The federal government agency assigns star ratings based on seven factors, in an effort to promote patient education, safety, and accountability:
• Mortality (death) rate
• Safety of patient care
• Readmission rates (how many patients have to be readmitted after being discharged from the hospital)
• Feedback on patient experience
• Effectiveness of care
• Timeliness of care
• Efficient use of medical imaging
