Military hospitals are also often understaffed, with doctors who have less experience than their civilian counterparts. That can be a recipe for disaster. When I was on active duty, as a hospital administrator, many of our doctors were repaying military scholarships to medical school. They reported for active duty fresh out of medical school and residency training, in other words, at the beginning of their careers. And when they repaid their four year obligations, most of them would ETS into a more profitable civilian career.
