Pearland Medical Center medical malpractice lawyer/attorney

Pearland Medical Center, located at 11100 Shadow Creek Parkway, Pearland, Texas 77584, in Brazoria County. It is affiliated with the Nashville, Tennessee based mega-chain of hospitals, HCA Healthcare System.

The 33-bed facility is the first hospital in Pearland. It offers services including an emergency room, women’s diagnostic imaging center for mammography, cardiovascular services (including a cardiac cath lab), intensive care unit (ICU), hemodialysis services, diagnostic imaging, outpatient surgeries, general surgery, spinal surgery, gynecological surgery, labor and delivery and postpartum recovery suites, dedicated see-section operating rooms, a well-baby nursery, a Level II neonatal intensive care unit  (NICU), and urology surgery.

Any time a patient or family member contacts Painter Law Firm to discuss substandard care at a hospital, one of the first things we do is look into past concerns and issues with that facility. Even though Pearland Medical Center is a relatively new hospital, having only opened and for every 2015, there have already been some quality of care issues.

Quality of care concerns

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sends surveyors to conduct on-site records reviews and inspections. It is a part of the efforts to promote safe patient care.

On January 5, 2016, Medicare/Medicaid cited Pearland Medical Center with two violations.

The first violation dealt with the hospital’s mishandling of a patient’s grievance. The surveyor found that the hospital leadership failed to respond in writing to a patient who complained to the staff that an unqualified radiology technician made several attempts to insert an intravenous (IV) catheter into his arm and punctured his vein down to his elbow bone.

As a former hospital administrator, I recognize that a hospital should properly handle patient and family member complaints and grievances. The reason this is important is that it provides real-world information about the quality of care that is being provided in hospital, and gives the administration opportunity to make corrections that improve patient safety.

The second violation concerned patient safety, over the same issue. The Medicare/Medicaid surveyor found that no one documented in a patient’s medical record, or wrote an occurrence report, when a patient’s vein was pierced through, during multiple temps to insert an IV catheter into his arm. Again, as a former hospital administrator, this concerns me because the hospital did not review or study this incident in an effort to take corrective action that would prevent it from happening again.
